Is anything out there "earth shattering"? Quick reflection reveals the answer is no.
So, please, stop using this expression. Particularly in reference to "news". Your news is especially not (nor ever) "earth shattering", unless perhaps you bring news of an impending meteor or earth-shattering death-ray. And even in those cases, it would be those devastating forces -- not the news -- that we could properly refer to as being "earth shattering".
But seriously: there is little that shatters Earths and destroys worlds (unless you are J. Robert Oppenheimer) so why can't we just stick with "important" instead?
